The scale and nature of child sexual abuse: review of evidence by the centre of expertise on child sexual abuse

Sexual abuse, or assault at any age is devastating, but children can have a particularly difficult time processing and understanding what has happened.

Ensuring young children and teenagers are able to access the support they need is vital to help them navigate the complex emotions they will feel and heal from the trauma.

Children may have difficulty understanding what they have experienced, they can often be confused and may not be able to express their thoughts and emotions.

To engage and support children and young people in the most appropriate ways there are specific services tailored to their needs.

These services include:

  • Individual or group therapy to help children better understand and manage their feelings about what has happened.
  • Play therapy allows children to make sense of their traumatic and confusing experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Talking therapy for older children and young people.
  • Therapeutic support and workshops for parents and carers.
  • Sex and relationship workshops

Some of the subjects that may be explored with children and young people to provide a better understanding of issues surrounding sexual abuse, exploitation and assault include:

    • Body boundaries
    • Sexual development
    • Healthy relationships
    • Consent
    • Child sexual exploitation
    • Sharing sexual images
